The road is now paved!
The surfacing was completed in Sept and the surface was done by ‘chip-sealing’.
The road from Port Alberni to Bamfield is ~ 76km commercial logging road with public access. Average driving time is ~1.5-2 hours. Please drive the speed limit as posted and watch the yield signs on the one-way bridges. Give way to commercial logging trucks and faster traffic. Be courteous and pull to the side where it is safe for faster vehicles to pass.
Yes. Here is the link to the excellent advice and directions on the Bamfield Marine Sciences website
Lady Rose Marine Services uses the Francis Barkley ship to service Bamfield. The ship sailings are Tues, Thurs, and Sat. Leaves Port Alberni at 8 am and arrives in Bamfield at 12 pm. It leaves Bamfield at 1pm and arrives in Port Alberni at 5pm. So unless you plan to extend your visit this won't work for camp.

Tsunami zone: Coastal areas of B.C. are most at risk of a tsunami. B.C. can be impacted by both local and distant tsunami. Those in B.C. most vulnerable to tsunamis live near inlets along the west coast of Vancouver Island, the coast of Haida Gwaii, or the mainland coast between Haida Gwaii and Vancouver Island. Bamfield has an emergency preparedness program and in the event of an earthquake we will evacuate to high ground within 20 minutes. If there is a distant earthquake that puts us at risk of tsunami there is also a siren to indicate the need to seek higher ground asap.
Cougars and Bears oh my: bears are a common sight. Be extremely vigilant and leave the area if you see a cub - black bears are typically only aggressive if you come between cubs and the sow. Cougars are here too but sightings are less common. NEVER turn your back on the a cougar or run. Make yourself appear as large as possible, yell, and back away slowly
